Our community of volunteers is dynamic. We love all of our volunteers, each of whom makes a wide range of projects happen at our sites in Captain Cook and Kealakekua. This includes tackling small construction projects, tending to garden areas, doing administrative tasks, assisting with educational programs or exhibits, and helping at events. Our volunteers bring enthusiasm, curiosity, and tremendous dedication and pride to their work. Volunteers also provide our organization with fresh perspectives and invaluable assistance. Everyone is welcome to apply. However, volunteers under the age of 18 must be accompanied by an adult chaperone and have written consent from their parents or legal guardian.
About Kona Historical Society’s Program
Volunteer assignments and projects vary throughout the year. Kona Historical Society’s needs change depending on current programs, exhibits, and projects. Still, there’s always a need for all types of skills and experiences so you don’t need to be a historian or an expert to apply.
KHS’ volunteer program is flexible.
Placement is based on the availability, interests, and skills of the volunteers, as well as the needs of the organization. Once accepted, individuals or groups can choose to volunteer regularly at a particular site or choose to move on to other projects after completing their initial assignment.
KHS has opportunities for groups, as well as individuals.
We have groups that participate in one-day projects as a way of giving back to the community and to team build. We have individuals who volunteer weekly, monthly, or whenever they are on the island. We also have individuals who volunteer only for particular events. Internship opportunities for high school and college students are also available.
Volunteering gives you a chance to learn new things.
Volunteer projects and assignments begin with a brief orientation and training by Kona Historical Society staff. Sometimes, volunteer projects develop into independent work. Usually volunteer projects are done collaboratively with Kona Historical Society staff.
